Laptop Internal Hard Drive Pata

If my laptop computer has an IDE/PATA internal hard drive, can it use a SATA external hard drive?

Addendum (made after 1st answer): When I upgrade the internal drive, it has to be another IDE drive. So that makes me think that the computer cannot deal with a SATA drive, internal and maybe external too???

Maybe thru your USB port.
