Laptop Linux Compatibility
What Linux distribution would be ideal for me?
I want to install Linux on an old laptop (Dell Dimension 8200) with the following specifications: Current OS: WinXP SP3 Pentium 4@2.4GHz (without Hyper Threading) 512 MB DDR RAM 64MB Radeon Mobility 9000 60GB HDD wireless card Broadcom 802.11 B / G What I want is mainly for Linux use the school. I begin the school year on January 4th and I want an operating system that is much better than XP (I'm sure you can go with any distribution and obtain that lol). What I'm looking mainly in Linux is as follows: fast boot times (20 seconds or faster), modern Web browser (Java, Flash, etc)-OpenOffice (Or similar office suite with support for Word (. Doc))-WIRELESS DRIVER (S )!!!!!-- Don 't worry about many other things. All suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance! Looking for something a little more minimal Ubuntu ... Ubuntu is a bit strong for what I use my laptop.
Best use is that a classmate or the computer center at the school recommended. Then it would be best to use the CD to another person who uses Linux. Check Xubuntu or AntiX 8.0. With AntiX you have to "apt-get Open Office. AntiX certainly work with your wireless card. X.docm Word 2007, the new file format. Word 2003 files are read very well. Of course macro not be converted. You can take advantage of Puppy Linux. If you want to download and burn CD images, you can buy osdisc. You can make an image Ghost Symantec installing XP in the case where you want to go back to XP. partimage fsarchiver Ghost and are substitutes. We start from a CD and copy the XP install on a USB disk. You can dual boot until you have become accustomed to Linux. You should know that Linux is not a replacement for the decline of Windows. see the article in the last reference.
