What's wrong with my laptop computer after trying to upgrade RAM?
I tried upgrading my laptop computer with more RAM. Replacing the RAM, the laptop won't start. When I power on, power button glows for about 5 seconds, then turns back off. I tried installing the original RAM back in, now that doesn't work either. I think I've seated the RAM properly. It's a Dell Latitude D600 laptop computer. What might be the problem?
Try this
1) Remove power cord and battery from laptop
2) Press and hold the power button on the laptop for a few seconds.
3) Remove all RAM and just put the 1 original stick in, in the same slot it was in originally.
4) Ensure that the RAM is pushed all the way into the slot before pushing down to click. It's hard to lock the RAM when it isn't inserted fully, but I have seen it done before.
5) Put battery back in and reconnect power cord.
6) Repeat the above with each stick of RAM in each slot. Thias will identify if there is a faulty RAM module and/or slot.
The reason for removing battery etc and pressing the power button is to ensure that the CMOS is cleared. This can become locked, and prevent the laptop from starting.
